Dennis Schröder experienced a particularly unpleasant situation during the match between Germany and Lithuania. The German team’s star point guard was targeted by racist chants from Lithuanian supporters, an incident that deeply affected him and which he felt compelled to publicly denounce.
« The Lithuanians, the supporters, they always travel with the team, but unfortunately, at halftime, they made monkey noises, » Schröder told German broadcaster MagentaSport. The 31-year-old player didn’t mince his words in condemning this disgraceful behavior.
« This is something I really cannot accept. Racism has no place in this world. Nevertheless, it was a good game. I think some supporters had to leave the stands because of security. I believe this was also reported, » continued the German star, visibly affected by these incidents.
Schröder also drew parallels with other sports affected by this scourge: « This simply doesn’t belong in this sport, not in football either. With Vinicius Junior, I saw that it happened all the time. But for me, today was the first time I experienced it with the Lithuanians, and it’s sad. »

His teammate Isaac Bonga, when asked about the incident in the press conference, stated: « I was too focused on the game and didn’t hear it. » A similar reaction came from interim coach Alan Ibrahimagic, who specified: « I didn’t hear it either, but there was a problem, there were no discussions between the teams, and we didn’t talk about it in the locker room. »
Following these incidents, one supporter in particular, identified by Schröder as the source of these chants, was ejected from the venue. The Lithuanian delegation later apologized to the German player, acknowledging the severity of the situation.
This incident unfortunately highlights the persistence of racism in sports, a scourge that officials and players continue to fight with determination.
