Davion Mitchell has found his new home in Miami. According to Shams Charania and ESPN, the 27-year-old point guard is set to sign a $24 million two-year contract with the Heat, following a convincing end of season in Florida.

Perfect integration into Spoelstra’s system

After arriving mid-season from Toronto, Mitchell quickly found his place in Erik Spoelstra’s rotation. His profile as a tough, defensive-minded point guard perfectly matched the Florida franchise’s philosophy. In 30 games with Miami, the former Kings player posted career-best statistics with 10.3 points per game on 50.4% shooting and an impressive 44.7% from three-point range, along with 5.3 assists.

Mitchell’s performances weren’t limited to the regular season. During the playoffs, he started three of the Heat’s four games, averaging 15 points and 6.3 assists. These statistics demonstrate the coaching staff’s confidence in the player nicknamed « Off-Night » for his outstanding defense against opposing stars.

A winning bet for both parties

This contract represents a significant increase for Mitchell, who will earn about double what he made in 2024-2025. Drafted in 2021 by Sacramento with the 10th pick, the point guard had seen his playing time decrease for two consecutive seasons before being traded to Toronto last summer.

The relatively short duration of the contract also offers interesting future prospects. Mitchell can renegotiate his salary upward if he continues to improve in the Heat system. For Miami, it’s a guarantee to retain a player who has demonstrated his adaptability and impact on both ends of the floor.

According to GeniusIQ, Mitchell ranked in the top 5 for best contested shot percentage this season among players who contested more than 500 shots. This statistic perfectly illustrates the player’s defensive impact, an ideal complement to his rediscovered long-range shooting with 40% from three-point range over the entire season.
