Damian Lillard waived by Bucks: a blessing in disguise for the All-Star guard?

The Milwaukee Bucks surprised everyone by waiving their star point guard Damian Lillard, according to multiple sources. This drastic decision aims to free up enough cap space to sign center Myles Turner, who agreed to a four-year, $107 million deal with the Wisconsin franchise.

Lillard, who was due $113 million over the next two seasons, will now have his contract stretched over five years through the « waive and stretch » provision. The 34-year-old guard will likely miss most of the 2025-2026 season after tearing his left Achilles tendon during Game 4 of the first-round series against the Pacers.
A golden opportunity to join a title contender
Paradoxically, this situation could prove beneficial for the former Trail Blazers star. According to The Athletic, Lillard is « thrilled with this decision, » which offers him rare freedom in NBA history. The nine-time All-Star can now choose any team without financial constraints being a factor, as Milwaukee will continue to pay his salary.
Several title contenders have already contacted Lillard, including the Golden State Warriors according to Marc Spears. This unique situation allows the future Hall of Famer to join a competitive franchise, even for a minimum salary, while keeping his earnings from the Bucks.
General manager Jon Horst has once again surprised the league with this bold move. By signing Turner, Milwaukee gets a center capable of replacing Brook Lopez with his 39.3% three-point shooting on 5.2 attempts per game and two blocks per game average. This acquisition aims to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo in a competitive environment.
Lillard must now decide whether to quickly sign with a new team to undergo rehabilitation under their supervision or wait until next summer to evaluate all his options. This complete freedom represents an exceptional opportunity for a player of his caliber, even if the circumstances of his departure from Milwaukee probably don’t match the scenario he had imagined.
