Cooper Flagg just keeps on impressing. Two days after his 51-point explosion against Orlando, the Dallas Mavericks rookie did it again with 45 points in a 134-128 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night. A historic performance that helps the Mavericks end a streak of 14 consecutive home losses.
At 19 years old, Cooper Flagg and LeBron James, 41, made history in this matchup. For the first time in NBA history, a teenager and a player over 40 each scored more than 20 points in the same game. Flagg finished with 26 points at halftime, while James had 22.
LeBron James, despite posting 30 points, 15 assists, and 9 rebounds, could not prevent his team’s defeat — a team already without Luka Dončić (hamstring injury) and Austin Reaves (oblique injury) for the remainder of the regular season. « Cooper has been in the zone these last few games, but he also plays consistent basketball all year long, » James said after the game. « It’s great to see, from the start of the season to now. It’s awesome, as a fan of his and a fan of the game. »
Flagg becomes the first rookie since Allen Iverson in 1996-1997 to string together two consecutive 40-point games. With 9 assists and 8 rebounds, the number one draft pick delivered a complete performance that cements his status as the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year.
The Lakers, now tied with Denver for third place in the Western Conference, see their playoff ambitions complicated by these key injuries. Luke Kennard recorded his first career triple-double with 15 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 assists, but it was not enough to withstand the Flagg hurricane.
This victory, while it does not improve the Mavericks‘ playoff chances, confirms the meteoric rise of Cooper Flagg as one of the breakout stars of this NBA season. With 96 combined points over his last two games, the rookie is setting standards rarely seen since Wilt Chamberlain.
