Charles Kahudi leaves ASVEL after ten years: a legend turns the page

Betclic ELITE - After ten seasons and six titles, Charles Kahudi officially leaves ASVEL. The iconic team captain, long expected to join the staff, will not continue within the organization. He will now help Ouest Lyonnais club (NM2) and doesn't rule out one last playing adventure.

Charles Kahudi (1.99m, 38 years old) will no longer wear the ASVEL jersey. The Villeurbanne club announced their iconic captain’s departure in a tweet, ending a ten-season collaboration marked by numerous titles and a strong imprint in the club’s modern history. A chapter ends, even if the former French international (turning 38 in July) isn’t completely closing the door on continuing his playing career.

An exit without on-court farewell

Since joining ASVEL in 2015, Charles Kahudi won four French championships, two French Cups and one Leaders Cup with Tony Parker’s club. But his final season was extremely frustrating: only 20 games played out of 79, persistent groin pain, a late return and little playing time. He couldn’t participate in the Betclic ELITE playoffs, which he deeply regrets. « This isn’t the ending I had imagined. Like everyone, you want to finish on the court with your teammates, wearing the jersey and winning a title, » he confided to Le Progrès.

No staff role, but a desire to give back

Previously discussed, his integration into the club’s organization is ultimately « not current. » But Charles Kahudi remains in the Lyon region, where he has found family balance. He has decided to support Ouest Lyonnais Basket, which plays in National 2 (NM2) and where one of his daughters plays. It’s his way of staying connected to his passion and sharing his experience. « Today, I have no doubts, I feel physically good, I still have the desire to give and especially to pass on knowledge, » he states.

An open future

ASVEL’s historic captain doesn’t want to close the chapter on his playing career too quickly. « If I have opportunities elsewhere, of course I’ll consider them, » he indicates. At 38, he still feels capable of contributing on the court, with an obviously different role but with the same passion.

While waiting to know his next destination, if there is one, ASVEL paid tribute to him. « Thank you for everything Captain, you’re a Great Man! » the club wrote on social media. A logical recognition for someone who gave so much, always with great humility.
