Challenged by Iceland, Loyd’s Poland remains undefeated at EuroBasket

EuroBasket - Although Iceland took the lead late in the game, Jordan Loyd's Poland won again at home at EuroBasket (84-75). Before facing France on Tuesday night, Jordan Loyd's team (26 points) remains undefeated and leads Group D. Most importantly, they have already qualified for the round of 16 in this edition they are co-hosting.

Poland had a scare this Sunday, August 31st in the last game of the day at EuroBasket when they left Tryggvi Hlinason alone to score a dunk giving Iceland the lead. With 3 minutes remaining, on the next possession, Iceland even took a 3-point lead after two free throws from former Denain player Elvar Fridriksson, who drove his team’s comeback after being down 16 points.

Undefeated before challenging France Tuesday night at home

But eventually, the hosts didn’t crack and regained control. Former BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque and Saint-Quentin Basketball center Dominik Olejniczak restored his team’s lead (75-73) before a slight foul on a 3-point attempt allowed Jordan Loyd (26 points on 6/12 shooting) to extend the gap for his new nation. In the end, Igor Milicic’s team secured their third victory (84-75) in three games, allowing them to remain alone and undefeated atop Group D after France’s surprising loss to Israel. They will face France this Tuesday at 8:30 PM at the Spodek Arena, hoping to defeat the team that had largely beaten them in the EuroBasket 2022 semifinals in Berlin.

But the Poles will play without pressure. Confident and supported by their home crowd, they have already qualified for the round of 16 in Riga. A good achievement for a team playing without their supposed star Jeremy Sochan and confirming their strong international results over the last ten years.
