Cam Thomas cut by the Bucks after only 18 games

Cam Thomas‘s adventure in Milwaukee is already over. The Bucks officially waived the 24-year-old guard this Monday, after only 18 games played in the Wisconsin franchise’s jersey. At the same time, the team converted Pete Nance’s two-way contract into a multi-year standard contract.
Promising start quickly forgotten
Yet everything had started well for Thomas. Signed on February 8 after being waived by the Brooklyn Nets, the former LSU player had impressed in his first games. With 34 points in his second appearance on February 11 against Orlando, then 27 points nine days later in New Orleans, he seemed to have found his place in Doc Rivers’ system.
The Bucks coach had praised him extensively: « I’ve had Jamal Crawford. I’ve had Lou Williams… And now, I have Cam Thomas », Rivers declared after that 34-point performance. General manager Jon Horst had even presented Thomas as a key element for the team’s future.
But things got more complicated afterward. Since February 11, Thomas has averaged only 9.6 points with 41% shooting and just 22% from 3-point range in 16 minutes per game. His defensive weaknesses and sometimes too individual play gradually reduced his playing time, culminating in two consecutive games without playing last week.

Pete Nance rewarded for his progress
Conversely, Pete Nance seized his opportunity. The 26-year-old forward-center, son of former All-Star Larry Nance Sr., has played 37 games this season averaging 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds in 12.1 minutes. His impressive percentages (56% from the field, 48% from 3-point range since February) and solid defense convinced the coaching staff.
This decision illustrates the current difficulties of the Bucks, who have a record of 29 wins and 41 losses and appear headed to miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Thomas, waived after March 1, will not be able to participate in the playoffs with a potential new team.
