Barcelona’s defensive web completely entangled Valencia Basket on Thursday night, forcing the home team to abandon their usual playing style in a low-scoring affair that came down to the final possessions. The victory improved Barcelona’s record while Valencia maintained their position among the top six teams despite the setback.

Barcelona’s tactical gamble pays off

Coach Xavi Pascual made a bold decision from the opening tip, deploying a small-ball lineup with four guards that initially confused Valencia. Joel Parra played as a stretch four in the unconventional setup, though Barcelona faced early injury concerns when Jan Vesely left the game after just 90 seconds.

Valencia tried to establish their preferred fast-paced rhythm behind the motivated play of Montero, but Barcelona’s deliberate tempo disrupted the home team’s flow. Argentine guard Juani Marco connected on a pair of 3-pointers to give the visitors an 18-15 advantage after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Barcelona extend their lead beyond ten points as Vesely returned to action. Will Clyburn shouldered the offensive load for the visitors, while Valencia struggled mightily from beyond the arc, missing 12 of their first 15 three-point attempts. Despite their shooting woes, Valencia’s interior scoring kept them within striking distance, converting 11 of 15 attempts near the basket in the first half. A buzzer-beating 3-pointer from captain Josep Puerto sent the teams to halftime with Barcelona clinging to a 35-33 lead.

Fourth quarter drama decides the outcome

Valencia completed their comeback early in the third quarter with a Darius Thompson triple, but the game remained a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to establish control. The home team’s 3-point shooting improved slightly, though they continued to struggle with Barcelona’s defensive pressure while losing the rebounding battle.

The final quarter featured extended scoring droughts for both sides before Neal Sako provided a spark for Valencia with crucial free throws and interior scoring. With Barcelona leading 64-62 and under a minute remaining, the game’s decisive sequence unfolded rapidly.

Montero lost possession for Valencia with his team trailing by one. After Punter missed a 3-pointer for Barcelona, Parra secured a crucial offensive rebound, setting up Clyburn’s go-ahead triple with 25 seconds left. Valencia had one final opportunity but turned the ball over again, this time Matt Costello losing control, allowing Clyburn to seal the victory from the free-throw line.

Valencia coach Pedro Martínez reflected on the defeat: « There are always several factors that explain a loss… In the final minute and forty seconds, we had our chances. We got a foul that seemed like the game could be there or even later when Darius recovered a ball from their inbound. The game became a coin flip and we didn’t play it very well. »

The loss dropped Valencia to 20 wins while Barcelona improved their playoff positioning with this crucial road victory in front of 13,558 spectators at Roig Arena.
