Bam Adebayo made Miami Heat history Sunday night by becoming only the second player in franchise history to reach 10,000 career points. The American center crossed this symbolic threshold in the 121-110 victory against the Detroit Pistons, Eastern Conference leaders, by scoring 24 points when he needed 23 before the game.
This exceptional performance perfectly illustrates the remarkable evolution of a player who was initially perceived differently when he arrived in the NBA. « I’m someone who was drafted to play defense, and everyone thought I was just an alley-oop threat, » Adebayo confided, recalling his beginnings nine years ago when Miami selected him after his only college season at Kentucky.

A remarkable offensive progression that complements his defensive game
The Heat captain, a title taken very seriously in Miami, has averaged a minimum of 18 points per game for the sixth consecutive season. His performance against Detroit was particularly impressive with four successful 3-pointers, bringing his total to 94 makes this season, already matching his last two seasons combined.
« It just shows the growth of my game, » Adebayo explained. « Obviously, this organization believes in me. I’ve been here long enough to be able to reach 10,000 points with the same team. And obviously, being in the history books behind someone like D-Wade is a great accomplishment. »
Coach Erik Spoelstra didn’t fail to highlight this transformation: « He arrived without necessarily being known as a scorer. He worked and established himself in that role. And for this team in particular, his points are really important. »
Although he still has a long way to go to catch up with Wade and his 21,556 points in a Heat jersey, Adebayo has another record within reach. He currently sits in second place in the franchise’s rebounding rankings behind Udonis Haslem, whom he replaced as captain. With 207 rebounds needed in Miami’s final 17 games, he could tie this record this season, having stated it was the only record he was really chasing.
Despite this spectacular offensive progression, Adebayo remains without question the Heat’s defensive anchor. Spoelstra regularly presents him as a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year, proving that his offensive evolution has in no way diminished his defensive impact, which remains his trademark since his arrival in the NBA.
