The Minnesota Timberwolves will have to do without their best player for several games. Anthony Edwards, who is dealing with a right knee injury, will be out between one and two weeks according to the franchise’s official announcement on Tuesday. An MRI taken by the star guard revealed inflammation that requires rest before re-evaluation.
Edwards was already ruled out for Tuesday night’s game against the Phoenix Suns after being listed as questionable for the last two games. Despite the discomfort, he had played and scored 42 points in the win against the Golden State Warriors before scoring 19 points in the loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

An absence that jeopardizes the race for individual awards
This injury comes at the worst possible time for Edwards and the Timberwolves. The 24-year-old guard is having the best season of his career with averages of 29.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, while shooting 49.2% from the field and 40.2% from three-point range. He was also named MVP of the 2026 All-Star Game last month.
Having already missed 11 games this season due to hamstring and foot injuries, Edwards finds himself in a delicate situation regarding his eligibility for end-of-season awards. The NBA rule requires a minimum of 65 games played, which means he can only miss a maximum of seven more games.
If the absence lasts two full weeks, Edwards would miss exactly seven games, bringing him to the eligibility limit. The Timberwolves play seven games over the next two weeks, including crucial matchups.
The impact is already being felt on the court for Minnesota, currently sixth in the West with a record of 41 wins and 27 losses. The team is only two games from third place but also just two wins ahead of Phoenix to avoid the play-in tournament. This absence from Edwards, who had never missed more than 10 games in his career before this season, represents a major challenge for the Timberwolves’ playoff ambitions.
