Antetokounmpo’s Greece dominates Israel and will face Lithuania in quarters

Greece completes the EuroBasket 2025 quarter-finals lineup. Led by an excellent Giannis Antetokounmpo (37 points on 15/22 shooting), Vassilis Spanoulis’s team stayed ahead to beat Israel 84-79 this Sunday evening in Riga. They will face Lithuania Tuesday evening in the quarter-finals.

Unstoppable Antetokounmpo
After Turkey, Germany, Lithuania, Finland, Poland, Georgia and Slovenia, Greece qualified for the EuroBasket quarter-finals this Sunday, September 7. Ideally launched by their superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo (21 points after 12 minutes of play, 37 in total, his second-best tally at EuroBasket), the Greeks had already scored 28 points after one quarter. Despite poor 3-point shooting (4/25), they grabbed many offensive rebounds (18) in an intense game marked by lack of control on both sides. In this context, they had built a rather comfortable lead at halftime (50-41). This lead increased to +14 (73-59) at the start of the final quarter, with the contribution of young Alexandros Samodurov (7 points and 6 rebounds in 16 minutes), after an Israeli comeback to within one possession (60-58) in the previous period.

At stake Tuesday: Greece’s first semi-final since 2009
A few brilliant moments allowed Israel to get closer, despite Deni Avdija (23 points on 5/11, 3 rebounds and 1 assist for a 16 efficiency rating in 34 minutes) struggling with his shot for long stretches. But the Greeks stayed in control until the end to win 84-79. Eliminated in the quarter-finals by Germany in 2022, they will now try to reach the final four, which would be the national team’s first since 2009. And a first for Antetokounmpo altogether.
