Panathinaikos failed to convince Jonas Valanciunas to join Greece this summer, as he preferred to continue his NBA career with Denver. However, the 2024 European champion could still attract another high-level center, as Richaun Holmes (6’10 », 31 years old) is reportedly between the NBA and an imminent signing with the Greek club, according to Eurohoops.
Richaun Holmes on Panathinaikos’ radar
As Panathinaikos was looking for an experienced player to complete their frontcourt, Richaun Holmes’ name is now on everyone’s lips. According to Eurohoops, the Athens club is in negotiations with the American center, who has been a free agent since leaving Dallas.
A former player for Sacramento, Phoenix, Philadelphia, and Dallas, Holmes remains a very athletic center, effective in rebounding and off-ball play. He averages 8.4 points and 4.3 rebounds throughout his NBA career.
The Greek media outlet indicates that the player hasn’t yet decided between returning to the NBA or making his first European appearance. However, Panathinaikos, last year’s EuroLeague champion, could offer him a key role and immediate visibility.
A prime target for Ergin Ataman
If he were to sign with Pana, Richaun Holmes would strengthen an already deep roster. He would complete a frontcourt that notably includes Mathias Lessort.
Recruiting a big man is a priority for coach Ergin Ataman, who has already lost several pieces in his frontcourt this summer. After the failed Valanciunas pursuit, a profile like Holmes – athletic, experienced, and versatile – checks many boxes for the Greek club.
