8 medals in 15 years: Sergio Scariolo’s record as Spain’s head coach

Sergio Scariolo has officially ended his career as national team coach after 222 games in charge. The Italian coach leaves his position after a brilliant trajectory, split into two periods (2009-2012 and 2015-2025), during which he became the most successful coach in Spanish basketball history with a total of eight medals.
The coach led Spain to eight of the 20 podium finishes in major international championships (Olympic Games, World Cups and Eurobasket). He was also present for five of the six titles won by the national team: the 2019 World Cup and four Eurobasket titles (2009, 2011, 2015 and 2022).

An exceptional record and lasting structure
These successes are complemented by two remarkable Olympic medals: silver in London 2012 and bronze in Rio 2016, as well as bronze at EuroBasket 2017. An exceptional record that comes alongside his work in building a structure across all youth categories, aligned with the senior national team’s work.
During his 15 years as head coach, 64 players made their debuts under his leadership, including both official and friendly matches. Among these 64 players, 28 defended Spain’s jersey in at least one major international tournament.
In total, Scariolo sat on the bench for 222 games, with a record of 166 wins and 56 losses. Of these 222 matches, 136 were official games with a very positive win-loss differential (101-35). He faced 54 different countries, with Lithuania (18 games), France (15 games), and Slovenia (13 games) being his most frequent opponents.
FEB President Elisa Aguilar paid tribute to the coach: « It has been a true pleasure to have Sergio for 15 wonderful years during which we reached the sky together so many times. » The Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) highlighted his contribution to transforming Spanish men’s basketball, creating a model that structured the sport from grassroots to elite level.
