Wizards Apologize After Controversial Failed April Fools’ Prank

The Washington Wizards had to issue a public apology Thursday after an April Fools’ stunt during their 153-131 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers Wednesday night sparked outrage on social media. The franchise, which holds the worst record in the NBA with 17 wins and 59 losses, found itself at the center of yet another controversy.
A Staged Stunt Gone Wrong
The incident occurred during halftime at Capital One Arena. A fan was invited onto the court to attempt a blindfolded half-court shot, with a promise of winning $10,000 if successful. After the fan missed the shot, the mascots and staff pretended to celebrate as if the basket had gone in, even presenting him with a giant check.
The deception was then revealed moments later on the big screen, showing the missed shot and announcing that the fan would receive nothing. This sequence quickly circulated on social media, sparking outrage among numerous observers.
« Doing this to a fan who chose to watch a 17-win team is outrageous, » wrote Jemele Hill, a journalist for The Atlantic, on X. Andrew Brandt, a former NFL executive turned analyst, added: « This is so representative of the Wizards’ season. Finding new ways to offend their (few) supporters. »

Belated Apology and Explanation
Facing mounting criticism, the Wizards issued a statement Thursday explaining that the entire sequence was scripted. « We apologize for yesterday evening’s April Fools’ joke that left many people wondering if we had deceived a fan, » the statement reads. « The staging involving our mascot and other members of our performance team was scripted and intended to celebrate this day. All participants were aware of the joke, but we missed the mark. »
The franchise clarified that the « fan » was actually a member of their performance team, composed of employees responsible for game day operations. However, this information was not revealed at the time, leading the audience to believe that a real fan had been duped.
This episode adds to an already catastrophic season for Washington, which has not won more than 20 games since the 2022-2023 campaign and will miss the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year. The Wizards concluded their statement by affirming that « our fans are our priority, and we remain committed to providing a positive experience for everyone who attends our games. »
