The No. 1 UConn Huskies made history Sunday night, completing their 11th undefeated regular season in program history with a commanding 85-49 victory over St. John’s at Madison Square Garden. The dominant performance extended their winning streak to 47 consecutive games, tying for the fifth-longest streak in Division I history.
« When you are fortunate enough to go through 31 games and win them all, there is something to be proud of, » UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. « There is something good about it, and they should feel really good about it. »

No Time for Celebration as March Madness Looms
Despite the historic achievement, there was no major celebration following the victory. The Huskies maintained their trademark focus on the ultimate prize, with Auriemma quickly shifting attention to upcoming challenges. National player of the year candidate Sarah Strong reflected the team’s mindset: « Coach came in [the locker room and] said he was proud of us. We also have a lot to work on to get ready for the Big East tournament, so just enjoy the win now and be ready to get back to work. »
The Huskies showcased their dominance throughout the season, posting a plus-37.8 scoring margin that ranks as the third highest in Division I history. Against St. John’s, they shot 57% from the field and forced 22 turnovers, with six players finishing with at least nine points.
UConn’s perfect regular season unfolded before a crowd of 9,612 at Madison Square Garden, marking the venue’s first standalone women’s college basketball game. The Huskies controlled the contest from the opening quarter, outscoring the Red Storm 24-9 in the first period.
Championship Expectations Without Paige Bueckers
Auriemma rejected the narrative that this year’s team surpasses last season’s national champions, particularly given the departure of superstar Paige Bueckers, the No. 1 WNBA draft pick. « You take away one of the top five players in the WNBA off the team and say you’re better. I don’t know how I can justify saying that, » Auriemma explained.
However, the coach remains confident in his current roster’s championship potential. « We have enough good players to have as good of a chance as anybody else out there to win a national championship, » he said. The team features likely All-Americans in Strong and Azzi Fudd, with Strong averaging 18.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.1 steals per game.
Looking ahead to the postseason, Auriemma acknowledged the increased pressure: « I do think when the NCAA tournament begins, it certainly is not going to be as easy as we experienced it last season. » The Huskies will face either Georgetown or Butler in Saturday’s Big East tournament quarterfinals, having already secured the No. 1 overall seed in early NCAA tournament bracket reveals.
« Generally, the best team usually wins the national championship, but not always, » Auriemma concluded. « It’s the team who comes together at the right time. »
