Tom Welter Extends Contract with Musel Pikes Amid Play-Down Drama

Tom Welter has committed his future to Musel Pikes by signing a contract extension for next season. The 32-year-old captain's decision to continue comes amid his team's dramatic resurgence in the play-down, capped by a double-overtime thriller against Mambra Mamer.

Tom Welter’s legs were still heavy after Monday’s spectacular double-overtime drama in Mamer. It took two extra periods before Marko Mustafic’s buzzer-beating three-pointer decided the contest—a game that will linger long in the memory of the veteran Pikes player and extends his team’s winning streak.

Musel Pikes: Team of the Moment

The Moselle club has become the team of the hour in the play-down. Unbeaten in their last five games, Musel Pikes capped off the regular season with three consecutive victories before winning both play-down matches against AB Contern and BBC Mambra Mamer. The double-overtime victory propelled them to first place in the standings.

« We finally found the two Americans who have a positive influence on our game, » Welter explained to Tageblatt, referring to the team’s recent acquisitions. « When we need points, they’re capable of creating their own chances, but they also give us Luxembourg players the space we need to operate. That’s something we were missing before. »

The Pikes had slipped to near the bottom of the standings at one point but have orchestrated a remarkable turnaround. It’s a scenario Welter and his teammates know well: in the past two years, Musel Pikes were written off at various points, only to stage comebacks at crucial moments and secure survival through the relegation playoffs.

Every Game a Final

The play-down format—where only first place guarantees direct Enovos League survival—is brutally tight this season. « It’s never been this close between the top three teams, » Welter emphasized. « Every game right now is like a mini-final. »

The gap between first and third place is razor-thin, with each loss potentially proving decisive. Saturday’s matchup against Racing Luxembourg will conclude the first half of the play-down, with the winner taking sole possession of first place.

Early Extension Signals Commitment

In a significant show of faith, Welter and teammate Sam Streef signed contract extensions before the play-down even began, committing to remain with Musel Pikes for next season regardless of the outcome.

« I actually thought about retiring, but I feel good and still have the desire to play, » the 32-year-old explained, adding with a laugh that he won’t continue forever. « Sam and I made this decision together. I think it was also a good sign for the club, showing them we’re willing to take on the necessary responsibility. »

The decision has provided additional motivation for the squad. Welter’s leadership and experience in previous relegation battles—where Musel Pikes ultimately survived—could prove invaluable in the coming weeks. Unlike in 2024 and 2025, the Pikes hope to avoid the relegation playoffs entirely and secure survival outright.

« It’s a long season, and the play-down takes its toll, » Welter noted. « It can be an advantage that we’re a team that can rotate more and where everyone has accumulated minutes. » The fact that a rotation player like Mustafic delivered the game-winning shot underscores the depth the Pikes have developed.

With Welter’s commitment secured and momentum on their side, Musel Pikes will battle through the remaining weeks of the play-down with renewed confidence—even if it means enduring another double-overtime thriller or two along the way.
