Thomas Heurtel soon in Greece?

Third in the Greek championship and Basketball Champions League (BCL) in 2024-2025, AEK Athens aims to get even closer to the top at the dawn of what promises to be a competitive season. To achieve this, the Greek capital club wants to strengthen significantly, particularly in the guard positions.
After initiating discussions with American-Mexican point guard Alex Perez, the Athens club is also targeting Thomas Heurtel (6’2″, 36 years old), an experienced player known for his creativity and leadership. According to Athletiko, this pursuit is considered complex, but AEK’s management, starting with owner Makis Angelopoulos, is ready to make financial efforts to convince the Agde native.
A successful stint in Spain, still high ambitions
After several months without a club, Thomas Heurtel made a return to Liga Endesa last spring with La Coruña. In 8 games, he averaged 12.5 points and 9 assists, showing he hadn’t lost his court vision, even though he faced criticism from the Galician club’s management after their relegation to the second division. Having played for the biggest European clubs, the former French international remains a reference at his position.

After knee surgery in April for a minor cleanup, the Béziers native is now fully recovered and looking for a stable project in Europe. He reportedly declined an offer from China, preferring a European adventure with an ambitious team. Athens, a city he appreciates and where his family would feel comfortable, checks several important boxes for him. There, he would also reunite with his friend Evan Fournier, with whom he shared a room on the French national team, as the latter plays for the neighboring club Olympiacos.
A player valued by Sakota
Coach Dragan Sakota, back at the helm of AEK, sees Thomas Heurtel as someone capable of taking his team to the next level. The appreciation is mutual, and if discussions continue, this story could reach a conclusion in the coming weeks.
