A Suspension That Has Lasted Since October

Terry Rozier has been away from the court since his arrest on October 23rd, as part of a large-scale investigation into illegal sports betting. The NBA immediately suspended him for his alleged involvement in these illegal activities, which reportedly date back to his time with the Charlotte Hornets.

The 30-year-old guard pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. His $26.6 million salary, which expires this summer, has been placed in escrow while his case proceeds through the courts.

This waiving will allow the Miami Heat to free up a roster spot to sign a player ahead of the playoffs. A pragmatic decision for a franchise that has been unable to count on Rozier for several months.

A Trade That Sparked Controversy

The Rozier affair also casts a shadow over the trade that brought him to Miami in January 2024. The deal from Charlotte is now under close scrutiny, particularly to determine whether the Heat should have been informed of the NBA and FBI investigations into the alleged conspiracy before the trade was finalized.

To resolve this dispute, the Hornets agreed to send a second-round pick from next June’s draft to the Heat. Miami still owes Charlotte its 2027 first-round pick (lottery-protected, which would become an unprotected 2028 first-round pick if not transferred) as part of that trade.

Commissioner Adam Silver had described the case as an « unprecedented situation » at a press conference during the NBA Cup in Las Vegas in December. A description that perfectly captures the scale of this scandal, which continues to shake the league.
