Rising star: Nathan De Sousa (Cholet) breaks his Betclic ELITE scoring record against Strasbourg

Cholet Basket kicked off their 2025-2026 season perfectly by defeating SIG Strasbourg (92-74) in a well-controlled game. While the team victory is noteworthy, Nathan De Sousa (6’2″, 22 years old) delivered a remarkable individual performance. The French point guard shattered his Betclic ELITE scoring record with 18 points, confirming his steady progression by surpassing his previous record of 13 points, achieved twice against Nancy and Blois in 2024.
A strong start validating his increased role
Against an overwhelmed Strasbourg team, the 22-year-old guard showed great offensive efficiency and wasn’t shy about taking shots. In just 19 minutes of play, the 2023 U20 European champion finished as his team’s top scorer with 18 points (5/8 on 2-pointers, 2/2 on 3-pointers, and 2/4 on free throws) for a 16 efficiency rating.
Steady progression since returning to Cholet
After spending the 2022-2023 season on loan in Pro B with Alliance Sport Alsace, Nathan De Sousa returned to Cholet Basket in 2023-2024. Since then, he has gained more responsibilities, and his new record shows he’s ready to reach another level, becoming a genuine offensive option for the Mauges team. Previously known mainly as a fierce competitor, intense defender, and good passer, the Picardy native averaged 5.6 points in nearly 19 minutes per game last season. With this standout offensive performance, he has set the tone for the new season and confirmed his role as a key player in Cholet’s roster, which includes two other point guards, T.J. Campbell and Aaron Towo-Nansi.
A complete contribution despite limited playing time
Beyond his scoring, Nathan De Sousa’s performance was well-rounded. Adding 2 rebounds and 3 assists (with only 2 turnovers), he showed his ability to impact the game in multiple ways. Not always consistent with his outside shooting, he demonstrated his improvement from 3-point range with a perfect 2/2 from behind the arc. This progress is particularly encouraging because, if sustained, it could open up new opportunities against opposing defenses. If he maintains this level, Nathan De Sousa will definitely be a player to watch closely this season in Betclic ELITE.
