Poland vs Slovenia, Act II: Jordan Loyd (32 points) and teammates outperform Doncic

EuroBasket - Like in the Euro 2022 quarter-finals, Poland defeated Slovenia (105-95) to start their home tournament. Despite a great performance, a lone Luka Doncic (42 efficiency rating) couldn't reverse the trend against Jordan Loyd (32 points with 7/8 from 3-point range) & co.

Defeated by Poland in their last EuroBasket match, Slovenia lost again to this opponent three years later. In a packed Spodek arena supporting the home team, Luka Doncic (34 points on 7/14 shooting, including 3/9 from three, 4 rebounds, 9 assists and 5 steals for a 42 efficiency rating in 36 minutes) lacked support from his team, particularly from Klemen Prepelic (-1 efficiency rating). On the other side, Poland seems to have made the right choice in naturalizing Jordan Loyd to succeed A.J. Slaughter. The AS Monaco guard scored 32 points in this 105-95 victory.

Once again, the Slovenians fell into their old habits: losing focus by complaining about officiating. Still in the game at halftime despite naturalized Jordan Loyd’s tremendous start, Aleksander Sekulic’s players lost their composure during the third quarter by arguing with the officiating crew. This pushed them further behind the hosts (54-69). But with Doncic’s talent, forced to create for his teammates against double teams, Alen Omic’s rebounding efforts, and Edo Muric’s contribution (17 points), Slovenia managed to close the gap.

32 points for Jordan Loyd

However, unable to stop the Polish players, particularly Jordan Loyd (32 points on 9/14 shooting, including 7/8 from three, in 28 minutes) and Mateusz Ponitka (23 points on 8/13, 7 rebounds and 2 assists in 28 minutes), they never came within one possession. They’ll need to find solutions by Saturday to secure their first win in this EuroBasket against France. Poland will face their second test against Israel, who defeated Iceland earlier in the day.
