In a gymnasium in Kingston, Jamaica, a teenager over two meters tall discovered basketball in eighth grade, leaving behind soccer and track and field for a sport that barely existed on the island. This late transition to the hardwood by Nick Richards would become one of the most unlikely stories in modern NBA history.
The future 7-foot center's destiny shifted at a camp in Jamaica, where New York scout Andre Ricketts immediately spotted his raw potential. Despite the infrastructural challenges of Jamaican basketball, Richards seized the opportunity to move to the United States and develop his game. His journey took him successively to St. Mary's High School in New York State, then to The Patrick School in New Jersey — two crucial steps in his development.
