According to NBA insider Marc Stein, a contract extension for PJ Washington with the Dallas Mavericks is « likely. » The former Charlotte Hornets player becomes eligible for an extension starting Friday, potentially worth up to $90 million over four years.
Starting role in question but recognized value
At Dallas since February 2024, Washington contributed to the Mavericks’ run to the NBA Finals last season. His stats of 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game, with 38.1% three-point shooting, demonstrate his versatility and efficiency.
However, the surprise arrival of Cooper Flagg, selected first overall in the Draft after Dallas won the lottery, changes the hierarchy. With Anthony Davis as the cornerstone, Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford in the paint, plus wings Naji Marshall and Caleb Martin, the rotation looks particularly deep at positions 3, 4, and 5.
Despite this increased competition, general manager Nico Harrison expressed optimism during the summer about Washington and Flagg’s on-court compatibility. At just 27 years old, the former Kentucky player maintains many admirers among NBA executives, as Marc Stein points out.
Extension means stability for Dallas
If this extension materializes, Washington will likely come off the bench this season, representing a luxury option for a playoff-ambitious team. Trade restrictions related to a four-year extension or one with a first-year increase above 20% would prevent him from being traded for six months, ensuring his presence in Dallas throughout Flagg’s rookie season.
This strategy aligns with the Mavericks’ long-term vision of making a deep playoff run in 2026. While his new contract could eventually be used in a future trade, Washington brings the experience and versatility needed for a championship team.
