Nick Calathes uncertain for EuroBasket 2025, facing a summer without national team?

After a truncated season with AS Monaco, Nick Calathes (36) might miss EuroBasket 2025. The American-Greek point guard, a historic pillar of the Hellenic national team, is suffering from persistent knee pain that jeopardizes his participation in the continental tournament.
Calathes sidelined, EuroBasket participation in doubt
Nick Calathes is not expected to participate in EuroBasket 2025. This is according to EuroHoops, which mentions recurring knee problems for the veteran point guard. While his departure from AS Monaco is imminent, it’s mainly his repeated absences this season in EuroLeague – only 13 appearances averaging 3.7 points and 3.8 assists – that raise concerns about his fitness.
The player, who has played for Panathinaikos, FC Barcelona, and Memphis in the NBA, is an iconic figure of the Greek national team with 149 caps and 1,248 points scored. He has participated in numerous international campaigns, including the Paris 2024 Olympics, World Cups in 2010, 2014, and 2019, and five EuroBasket editions, including 2009 where he won the bronze medal.
Greece will have to do without Walkup… and probably Calathes
Already without Thomas Walkup, Greece might use Tyler Dorsey as their naturalized player. Head coach Vassilis Spanoulis, who is starting his first major competition leading the national team, should also be able to count on Giannis Antetokounmpo, although the final roster hasn’t been announced yet.
Greece will start EuroBasket 2025 in Lemesos (Cyprus), in a challenging group including Italy, Spain, Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and host country Cyprus. The top four teams from the group will advance to the final round in Riga (Latvia), from September 6 to 14.
