Jonathan Kuminga on Kings’ radar: Warriors set their price

The Sacramento Kings are positioning themselves as the « strongest contender » for Jonathan Kuminga according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, although no deal seems imminent. The Golden State Warriors forward’s situation has drawn attention from several NBA franchises, but negotiations remain stalled.
Warriors set their conditions for a sign-and-trade
Golden State made a qualifying offer of $7.9 million to Kuminga, making him a restricted free agent. The Warriors thus retain the right to match any offer the 22-year-old player might sign. According to Slater, the California franchise is demanding « a promising young player and a first-round draft pick » in any sign-and-trade scenario.
The Kings have already tried their luck by offering Devin Carter, Dario Saric and two second-round picks. A package that Golden State considered a « lowball attempt » and showed no interest in. The Warriors are clearly waiting for a more substantial offer for their former 7th pick in the 2021 draft.
Several franchises interested despite frozen market
Besides Sacramento, the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets have all shown « varying levels of interest » in Kuminga. However, as Slater points out, « restricted free agency in the NBA remains very cold. Lots of talk and little action. »
Kuminga’s situation reflects his frustration from last season, where he only started 10 games compared to 46 in the 2023-2024 campaign. « I hate the fact that everybody keeps telling me to be ready, to get ready, » he said in April. « I already know I’m ready. The more you keep telling me to get ready, the more irritating it becomes. »
With averages of 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists last season, Kuminga is looking to become « an important part of the core » of his next team. Sacramento could offer this opportunity to the young forward as part of their rebuild.
