Victor Wembanyama announced his arrival on the playoff stage in spectacular fashion Sunday night. The 22-year-old French sensation scored a game-high 35 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a commanding 111-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series.

Wembanyama’s dominant performance shattered franchise history, becoming the highest-scoring Spur ever in a postseason debut. His 35 points surpassed the previous mark of 32 points set by Hall of Famer Tim Duncan in 1998, placing the young star in elite company alongside legends who watched courtside at Frost Bank Center.

A masterclass performance under pressure

The atmosphere at Frost Bank Center was electric, with 19,372 fans creating the most excitement the arena had seen all season. Wembanyama felt the difference immediately. « The first time I stepped on the court, even for warmups, I felt the atmosphere was different, » Wembanyama said. « Everybody was ready. The fans were ready. It’s probably the most excitement I’ve seen this year in this arena. »

Wembanyama made NBA history by becoming the first player ever to score 35 points or more in his postseason debut while connecting on at least five 3-points. He shot an efficient 13-of-21 from the field and an impressive 5-of-6 from 3-point range, adding five rebounds and two blocks in 33 minutes of action.

Portland deployed various defensive schemes and eight different defenders to try containing the French phenom, but Wembanyama found success against each matchup. On the defensive end, he held the Trail Blazers scoreless on 11 attempts when serving as the primary defender.

Spurs dominate despite Portland’s comeback attempt

San Antonio controlled the game’s tempo early, with Wembanyama scoring 21 points in the first half on 8-of-13 shooting to help build a 59-49 halftime lead. Portland mounted a brief comeback to start the third quarter, using an 8-0 run highlighted by a Scoot Henderson pull-up jumper to cut the deficit to just two points.

However, that would be as close as the Trail Blazers could get. Wembanyama closed out the victory with a 14-point fourth quarter, checking out with 52.8 seconds remaining to a thunderous ovation from the fiesta-clad crowd.

« I thought he was ready, » San Antonio coach Mitch Johnson said. « There’s an approach that we all have in terms of expectation of a heightened level of preparation, detail, nuance, competitiveness, physicality, everything. There’s a real desire for that young man to participate in that. This was his first playoff game, and he has lofty expectations and goals for himself. »

The victory marked San Antonio’s first playoff win in seven years and improved their home playoff record against Portland to a perfect 11-0, the best home record by any NBA team against any franchise in postseason history.
