Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Knicks and the Spurs was briefly interrupted by an unusual incident. Deep in the fourth quarter, a fan stormed the court at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio to attempt a selfie with Victor Wembanyama.

The scene unfolded with 6 minutes and 28 seconds remaining, with the Knicks leading 92–86. The fan, phone in hand, burst onto the court from the sideline opposite the team benches, crossed toward the Spurs’ offensive end, then stopped in front of Wembanyama and Mitchell Robinson near the three-point line. Two security guards quickly intervened and escorted him off the court within seconds.
Footage of the scene shows Wembanyama smiling, visibly amused by the interruption, while Robinson appeared puzzled. Play was suspended for about a minute. The referees were unable to determine which team had possession at the time of the incident — Dylan Harper had lost the ball just before the intrusion — and ruled a jump ball at center court. Wembanyama won the tip and the game resumed.
The French superstar responded with humor after the game. “I had never been in that situation before,” Wembanyama said. “I didn’t know how to react. It really surprised me, almost as much as the time a bat flew across the court during the game against the Timberwolves.” Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson downplayed the episode: “I don’t think it was a big deal. Security got him out of there. I think everyone moved on.”
On the court, the Knicks won 105–95, powered by 30 points from Jalen Brunson. Wembanyama finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks, but shot just 6-of-21 from the field. “I was bad tonight,” the Frenchman admitted. “It’s as simple as that. I think we let this game slip away.”

While Wembanyama walks away a loser on this night, the fan faces potentially far more serious consequences… Any court invasion during an NBA game exposes the perpetrator to immediate ejection, a possible lifetime ban from the arena, and even criminal charges. In Texas, entering a restricted area of a sports venue is a criminal offense, punishable by up to 180 days in jail for trespassing or disturbing the peace.
New York, appearing in its first Finals since 1999, takes the series lead in a matchup that also marks Wembanyama’s debut on the biggest stage in world basketball.
