Monaco falls to Red Star Belgrade

After snatching victory against Olympiacos thanks to a decisive shot from Mike James (1.85m, 35 years), AS Monaco lost this Sunday to Red Star Belgrade (86-79) in Nicosia. The American point guard, previous day’s hero, completely underperformed with 0 points in 18 minutes, while Alpha Diallo and Nikola Mirotic were the standouts for Monaco.

Monaco trapped by Serbian intensity
Missing several key players still at EuroBasket (coach Spanoulis, players Theis, Loyd, Okobo), the Roca Team fielded an unusual starting five with Nick Calathes, Nemanja Nedovic, Terry Tarpey, Jaron Blossomgame and Yoan Makoundou. After a difficult start (0-7), ASM relied on Blossomgame and Makoundou to respond, before Nikola Mirotic and Alpha Diallo took over.
Against an aggressive Serbian defense, Monaco capitalized on David Michineau’s flashes and Calathes’ passes to stay in the game until the 3rd quarter (65-65). But in the final stretch, Red Star managed the money time better, led by Jordan Nwora (15 points) and Yago dos Santos Riviero (14 points).
Mike James unrecognizable
Mike James had a nightmare evening: 0/6 shooting, 4 turnovers, for -5 in evaluation over 18 minutes. Symbolic of Monaco’s irregular offense (23 turnovers), the Oregonian couldn’t find his rhythm against a dense and athletic defense.
Alpha Diallo (19 points) and Nikola Mirotic (15 points) were the most consistent, while Jaron Blossomgame (12 points) and Yoan Makoundou (7 points) showed energy. Despite the loss, ASM leaves Cyprus with valuable collective experience before the LNB Supercoupe.

Next up: LNB Supercoupe
Now focus shifts to the LNB Supercoupe, organized this weekend on Philippe-Chatrier court, where Monaco will face Le Mans, Paris and Boulazac. The Roca Team could by then welcome back Daniel Theis, European champion with Germany, and coach Vassilis Spanoulis, bronze medalist with Greece.
