Doug Christie stays: Sacramento keeps coach despite a disastrous season

Doug Christie remains the Kings' head coach for 2026-2027. Despite a dreadful 22-59 record, Sacramento is keeping its faith in the former franchise player, believing injuries played a bigger role than coaching.

The Sacramento Kings made a surprising decision by confirming Doug Christie as head coach for the 2026-2027 season. Despite one of the worst campaigns in franchise history, with only 22 wins and 59 losses, the California front office chose to continue with the 55-year-old former guard.

Difficult circumstances that support Christie’s retention

Sacramento’s decision is largely explained by the exceptional circumstances of this season. The Kings were decimated by injuries from the very start, losing key players such as Keegan Murray before the regular season even began due to a torn thumb ligament, then Domantas Sabonis in November with a partial meniscus tear.

General manager Scott Perry and the front office believe Christie never had the opportunity to work with a full roster. Their projected starting five never played a single minute together this season. Zach LaVine was limited to 39 games before a season-ending surgery, while Sabonis played in only 19 games.

After a disastrous start of 12 wins and 46 losses — including a 16-game losing streak in February that set a franchise record — the Kings showed signs of improvement, posting a 10-13 record over their final 23 games.

Young player development as a decisive factor

Part of the decision to retain Christie rests on the positive development of the roster’s young talent. Sacramento’s executives were impressed by the progress of rookie big men Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell, as well as first-round pick Nique Clifford.

Christie, who took over the team in December 2024 following the firing of Mike Brown, signed a three-year contract last summer. His retention fits into a rebuilding strategy, as the franchise moves toward a roster rejuvenation.

The Kings, currently tied with the Utah Jazz for the fourth-worst record in the league, now hope to benefit from the May 10 draft lottery to land a high pick in a promising class. That selection could be crucial in giving Christie the tools needed to turn things around next season.
