The first round of the NCAA tournament officially begins Thursday with an exciting lineup to kick off March Madness. This opening day naturally features several highly-rated NBA prospects, while also giving fringe players a chance to prove themselves.

These games will allow new faces to emerge on the national stage. Some generational stars are expected, but also more experienced players looking to position themselves in the late first round or second round of

AJ Dybantsa vs Dailyn Swain: Clash of Generations

The matchup between BYU (6th seed) and Texas (11th seed) will pit two completely different profiles against each other. Swain struggled in the First Four despite the Longhorns qualifying on a game-winner against NC State. The 6’8″ forward converted only 2 of 9 shot attempts, but was more impactful in the paint and on defense with eight rebounds, two steals, and one block.

Despite this disappointing performance, Swain leads Texas this season with averages of 17.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. This versatile two-way player could be selected between the late first round and mid-second round.

He’ll face a consensus top-2 pick in Dybantsa, who led the nation in scoring this season. The BYU superstar will have the opportunity to solidify his case for the number one draft position against Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer, while Swain could become a household name.

Bruce Thornton vs David Punch: Experience vs Potential

The game between Ohio State (8th seed) and TCU (9th seed) will showcase two very different profiles. Thornton established himself as one of the best Big Ten players in the regular season, posting averages of 20.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. This 6’2″ guard excels offensively at all levels with efficient shooting splits (56-40-83).

Punch represents more of a versatile defensive prospect, seeking to prove he deserves to be drafted in June. TCU’s leading scorer averages 14.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and two blocks per game. His NBA profile would be more as a useful defender.

The matchup between Illinois (3rd seed) and Penn (14th seed) will also feature Keaton Wagler facing TJ Power. Wagler, the freshman surprise of the year after being ranked very low in high school, became Illinois’ leading scorer and a potential lottery pick. Power drew national attention with his 44-point, 14-rebound performance in the Ivy League tournament final, securing Penn’s March Madness berth.
