Orlen Basket Liga Playoffs: Luke Barrett’s Playoff Explosion Carries Arka Gdynia Past Slask Wroclaw

Orlen Basket Liga Quarter-Finals – Luke Barrett went from seasonal role player to playoff problem in one 26-minute stretch, scoring 22 points as Arka Gdynia survived a two-point scare against WKS Slask Wroclaw in the quarter-final opener.

The Polish Orlen Basket Liga‘s quarter-finals are underway, and Arka Gdynia scraped past WKS Slask Wroclaw 86-84 on May 20, to push the series to a game 5, in exactly the kind of game nobody expects to remember: a narrow, grinding affair between two clubs playing tight defense and making life difficult for each other. What made it worth noting was Luke Barrett.

The Fever Dream Efficiency Night

Barrett’s season résumé reads like a competent role player’s. Twenty-three years old, American, 1.98m—he’d averaged 9.8 points across 34 regular-season games while shooting efficiently (55.1% overall, 44.7% from three) but without ever really exploding into games. Steady. Unspectacular.

Against WKS Slask Wroclaw, something shifted. Twenty-two points in 26 minutes is not a typo—it’s more than double his nightly average crammed into half a game’s worth of minutes. In a two-point decision where possessions feel like currency, that kind of punch matters. That’s the whole game right there.

The obvious question: is this sustainable, or just playoff randomness? Probably the latter. But here’s what’s interesting: Barrett didn’t need to go 10-for-12 or something mythical to get there. He just played with the aggression a player his size and skill set should always possess. Against Slask’s perimeter-oriented defense, Arka simply kept feeding him and let his size and shooting touch do the work.

Everything Else Was Tight

This wasn’t a blowout masked by Barrett heroics. Arka got contributions—Milan Barbitch (18 pts, 7 reb) who also hit the game winner, Jaroslaw Zyskowski (14 pts, 4 reb), Mike Okauru (10 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast)—but also had to survive Slask staying in the fight. Jakub Niziol (20 pts, 6 reb, 5 ast) orchestrated well enough. Angel Nunez (10 pts, 7 reb) and Noah Kirkwood (11 pts) kept Wroclaw threatening. Nothing separates teams in close games—and at 86-84, they don’t get closer—except execution in isolation possessions and who has the most reliable closer.

On this night, it was Barrett. Whether Wroclaw respects that enough to adjust in Game 2 will say something about how seriously they’re taking these playoffs.
