Draft’s #1 pick leaves court frustrated after debut against James’ Lakers!

Cooper Flagg had a mixed professional debut Thursday night at the NBA Summer League. The 2025 Draft’s #1 pick led Dallas to a tight 87-85 win against the Lakers, but his offensive performance left much to be desired with only 5 makes on 21 attempts.
The 18-year-old finished the game with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block in 32 minutes of play. Despite a disappointing shooting percentage, including 0/5 from 3-point range, Flagg showed why he was considered his generation’s most promising prospect.
Impact Beyond Offensive Statistics
While his shooting numbers weren’t flattering, Cooper Flagg demonstrated his ability to influence the game in all aspects. His versatility resembles that of great NBA forwards, with averages similar to Scottie Barnes and Jalen Johnson last season.
The game’s decisive play bears his signature: with 1 minute 10 seconds remaining, Flagg blocked DJ Steward’s attempt before launching the fast break that ended with Ryan Nembhard’s winning 3-pointer.
His first professional basket will remain memorable: a powerful fast-break dunk after a steal, which electrified the Thomas & Mack Center crowd. This sequence perfectly illustrates his transition potential, an aspect of his game that should wreak havoc in the NBA.

Clear-Headed Debut Despite Pressure
After the game, Cooper Flagg didn’t try to hide his disappointment regarding his shooting. « It’s probably one of the worst games of my life, but we won and that’s what really matters to me, » he told reporters.
The Maine native also discussed the pressure felt during this first appearance: « I was obviously a bit nervous, it’s a new environment, lots of new fans. I was a bit nervous, a bit excited, but just happy to be here. It’s a dream come true. »
Bronny James finished with 8 points on 2/8 shooting, missing a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds. Despite the media rivalry, James paid tribute to his opponent: Flagg will be « special » according to LeBron James’s son.
The Mavericks will return to action Saturday against the San Antonio Spurs, another opportunity for Cooper Flagg to showcase his talent and improve his shooting.
