NM1 Format

After six years of a format known for being hard to follow, the Nationale 1 will be simplified starting from the 2024/25 season. Adopted in 2018, the new Nationale 1 format had never won unanimous approval from clubs. After six seasons, the three pools — including the obscure intermediate group — have run their course and will be replaced from the 2024/25 season onward by a streamlined competition.

The first phase will still follow the same system, with 14 teams on each side. It is the second phase that will be overhauled: the top seven from each group will move into the upper pool, while the bottom seven will drop into the lower pool. As before, the head-to-head results from phase 1 will be carried over.

The winner of the second phase will earn promotion to Pro B, but will no longer be crowned French champion. The title will be decided at the end of the playoffs.
