The Sacramento Kings‘ impressive streak came to an end Sunday night at the Golden 1 Center. After four consecutive victories, the Kings fell 117-110 to the Portland Trail Blazers in a game they never really controlled. This defeat is a reminder of the reality of a difficult season for Sacramento, now at 12 wins and 31 losses.
Deni Avdija was the main architect of this Portland victory, scoring 30 points on 10/18 shooting in his return after missing three games due to back pain. The forward also dished out 8 assists in 32 minutes of play.
Interior Defense: A Persistent Weakness
The Kings’ main problem once again came in the paint. Portland dominated inside with 62 points scored versus 50 for Sacramento, and especially an impressive 10/11 in the restricted area. The Blazers were particularly effective in the first half, scoring 38 points in the paint against just 20 for the Kings.
Donovan Clingan took advantage of these defensive gaps to record a double-double of 21 points and 17 rebounds, his 15th of the season. The sophomore center scored 17 of his points after halftime, along with Shaedon Sharpe, 27 points, to keep Portland at a distance.
Despite a late comeback attempt led by Malik Monk (23 points) and Russell Westbrook (23 points as well), the Kings could never completely close the gap created in the first period. Sacramento cut the lead to four points with 18 seconds remaining, but it was too late.

Sabonis in Reintegration Phase
Playing his second game since returning after missing 27 games with a knee injury, Domantas Sabonis played 20 minutes off the bench. The Lithuanian center compiled 8 points and 8 rebounds, but also 6 turnovers, showing he hasn’t yet regained his optimal rhythm.
Coach Doug Christie actually preferred to leave Dylan Cardwell on the floor in crucial moments. The rookie recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. « He’s just coming back, it’s a process, » Christie explained regarding Sabonis’ management.
This defeat, although it ends a nice streak, isn’t necessarily negative for Sacramento in terms of the draft. The Kings continue their seven-game homestand Tuesday against the Miami Heat.
