The Minnesota Timberwolves celebrated more than just a 132-126 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday night. In what became the highlight of their regular-season finale, franchise icon Kevin Garnett made his triumphant return to Target Center for the first time in eight years, turning fan appreciation night into an emotional homecoming.

With the Timberwolves already locked into the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference and the Pelicans long eliminated from playoff contention, the main attraction was clearly Garnett’s presence. The Hall of Fame forward, who remains the all-time franchise leader in nearly every major statistical category, made a dramatic entrance alongside Timberwolves co-owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez after player introductions.

A Special Moment for Players and Fans

The crowd erupted as Garnett walked onto the court, patting his heart with his hand in acknowledgment of the overwhelming reception. The emotional moment continued when he embraced current star Anthony Edwards with a bear hug before taking his courtside seat, bridging the gap between eras of Timberwolves basketball.

« [Garnett] was excited to be back, no doubt about it. And it was a pretty neat moment when he walked out, » said Wolves coach Chris Finch. « I think it was good for our guys because they got a sense of just how important somebody with a legacy is and what that really means. »

Garnett’s return marks a significant reconciliation with the franchise. After a falling out with previous owner Glen Taylor following his retirement, the legendary forward reached an agreement last year to serve as a team ambassador. His No. 21 jersey is set to be retired at a future date, cementing his legacy with the organization.

Resting Stars for Playoff Push

With their playoff positioning secured, the Timberwolves (49-33) rested nine of their top 10 players, giving fan favorite Joe Ingles a token start. The veteran guard delivered a solid 15-point, 10-assist performance for the appreciative crowd. Rookie forward Joan Beringer seized the opportunity with an impressive stat line of 24 points, 12 rebounds, and seven blocks.

Finch noted that Garnett took time to speak with players and coaching staff before the game, adding that Sunday was « a special night. » The pregame interactions provided valuable perspective for the current roster as they prepare for their playoff run, learning from one of the franchise’s greatest players about what it means to represent Minnesota basketball.
