Kevin Durant has put an end to speculation about his international retirement. Contrary to popular belief, the 37-year-old American superstar truly wants to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, four years after his Paris triumph.
« Hell yeah, I want to play, » Durant told ESPN. « I’d love that, but I need to stay on top of my game. I don’t expect anything, I want to perform on the court and make sure Grant [Hill] and everyone who makes decisions wants to put me on the team. I don’t want to be selected just because of seniority. I still want to prove I can help the team win. »
Highest PPG in a Olympic run for a player winning a Gold Medal:
2024- 14.7
2021- 20.7
2016- 19.4
2012- 19.5
2008- 19.6
2004- 19.3The only player on here 3 times is Kevin Durant & for team usa is the all time leader in points, 3’s, gold medals and gold medal games played in 💯 https://t.co/Tmo0BiNapB pic.twitter.com/RxS9BVzFuU

The all-time leading scorer in Team USA Olympic competition history will be close to 40 years old at the next Games. He has set as a condition that he remains an effective player to deserve his selection, but has already shared his intentions with general manager Grant Hill.
Durant also clarified misunderstandings around a supposed « last dance » during Paris 2024. « You, the media, projected that. This ‘last dance’ story, where does that come from? I never said I wasn’t going to play anymore. LeBron said it. You didn’t hear it from me or from Steph », he explained.
The four-time Olympic gold medalist also responded to criticism about the supposed rise of European basketball against American dominance. « I don’t like these discussions about American style versus European style of approaching the game. All I hear is ‘the AAU is destroying the game, Europeans do things right while Americans do it wrong.’ That’s a lot of bullshit. I can read between the lines: it’s an attack on Black Americans. We control this sport; they’re tired of us controlling this sport », he stated bluntly.
Durant concluded with a touch of irony: « ‘France is coming for you.’ Really? We crushed them. » A direct reference to the Paris 2024 Olympic final, won by Team USA against Victor Wembanyama‘s French team.
Unlike LeBron James who has confirmed his international retirement and Stephen Curry whose participation seems unlikely, Durant maintains his Olympic ambitions for Los Angeles 2028.
