Jonathan Kuminga rejects Warriors’ offers, Phoenix and Sacramento on alert!

Kuminga turns down Golden State's contract proposals estimated at $40 million over two years. The Suns and Kings remain the most determined suitors for the 22-year-old wing in a sign-and-trade.

The contract situation between Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors is stalling and could extend well beyond this month according to Shams Charania of ESPN. The 22-year-old wing, a restricted free agent, categorically refuses his franchise’s current offers and is actively exploring his options in the market.

According to Marc Stein, the Warriors’ best offers to Kuminga « topped out in the range of $40 million over two years. » An offer deemed insufficient by the player’s camp, who is seeking a four-year contract at $30 million per season, while Golden State hopes to sign him for three years with an average annual value of $20 million.

Phoenix and Sacramento lurking despite obstacles

The Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings emerge as « the two most aggressive teams » according to Charania, having made « concrete offers » to attract Kuminga. The former 6’7″ player, who averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game last season, is primarily seeking « a more guaranteed starting role and a visible opportunity » according to Anthony Slater of ESPN.

However, several obstacles complicate these negotiations. Duane Rankin reports that Phoenix « lacks the necessary draft capital and assets » to complete a sign-and-trade, especially since Golden State demands a first-round pick in any exchange according to Jake Fischer. The Suns have no first-round pick available, likely eliminating them from contention.

On Sacramento’s side, Brett Siegel indicates that the Kings « have signaled they’re willing to part with talents like Devin Carter, Dario Saric, and a protected first-round pick. » But Golden State « gave no consideration to this package and immediately rejected it. » The Warriors would prefer to get Keegan Murray and Keon Ellis, two players that Sacramento absolutely refuses to give up.

A Warriors executive summarizes the franchise’s philosophy: « We’re trying to be responsible. With the thresholds and hard caps, we can’t throw money out the window. We still like Jonathan, but we won’t compromise our ability to build the roster now or in the future. »

This contract stalemate delays the Warriors’ free agency pursuits, with the team still having six roster spots open. Without a quick resolution, Kuminga might be forced to stay with Golden State while waiting for a potential trade at the deadline.
