The Denver Nuggets won Game 1 of their first-round series against the Minnesota Timberwolves by a score of 116-105, in what was arguably the most anticipated matchup of this first round of the playoffs. Despite a rough start trailing by 12 points, the 2023 champions raised their game to secure the win at home.

Jamal Murray Perfect at the Line, a Franchise Record

Jamal Murray was the Nuggets’ offensive engine with 30 points, setting a franchise record by making all 16 of his free-throw attempts. The performance was all the more remarkable given that the Canadian guard went 0-for-8 from three-point range, yet consistently attacked the rim to compensate.

« I thought I was fouled on every single one of them, » Murray said after the game. « I don’t know what everyone is talking about. Real fouls. »

That ability to draw fouls was crucial for Denver, who converted 30 of their 33 free throws, making up for a glaring three-point shooting slump in the second half (1-for-17).

Nikola Jokic delivered his usual performance with another triple-double: 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists. The three-time MVP needed some time to match Minnesota’s defensive intensity, but took control at key moments, including a personal 5-0 run that stopped the Timberwolves’ comeback in its tracks.

Aaron Gordon, the X-Factor Despite Early Foul Trouble

Aaron Gordon also played a decisive role despite picking up three quick fouls in the first quarter that sent him to the bench. Upon his return after halftime, the forward was brilliant, throwing down a transition dunk over Anthony Edwards, hitting a corner three, and slamming home a two-handed putback that electrified the Denver crowd.

« When Aaron plays, we are a different team. That’s a fact, » said head coach David Adelman. « It’s not the stats. It’s the feeling. We feel bigger because we are. »

On the Wolves’ side, Anthony Edwards finished with 22 points but shot just 7-for-19, visibly hampered by his knee issues. Julius Randle also disappointed with 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Only Rudy Gobert stood out with 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting, giving Jokic a real battle in the paint.

This victory gives the Nuggets a valuable lead in what promises to be a tight series. The two teams hold a combined 15-14 record against each other in regular season and playoff games since 2023, reflecting just how evenly matched this rivalry is. Game 2 takes place Monday night in Denver.
