J.B. Bickerstaff Wins NBCA Coach of the Year Award with Detroit

A Historic Turnaround in Three Seasons

Since taking over the Pistons bench in the 2024 offseason, Bickerstaff has completely transformed a franchise that had hit rock bottom. Detroit went from the worst record in franchise history (14-68 in 2023-2024) to 44-38 in his first season, then took another step forward this year with an outstanding 60-22 record.

This performance marks only the third 60-win season in franchise history and the first in two decades. The Pistons claimed the top seed in the Eastern Conference, despite their leading scorer Cade Cunningham missing 18 games.

The team posted the second-best defense in the league with a defensive rating of 108.9, and matched the Spurs for the second-best net rating in the NBA (+8.4). This transformation is built on a physical and relentless style of play that has won over players and fans alike.

Unanimous Recognition from His Peers

The NBCA award, created in 2017 in honor of former executive director Michael H. Goldberg, is voted on by all 30 head coaches in the NBA. “I am extremely honored to receive this recognition from my coaching peers,” said Bickerstaff. “None of this is possible without the many people I have been fortunate to surround myself with throughout my journey.”

This distinction is often a strong indicator for the official NBA Coach of the Year award, voted on by the media. In seven of the nine years since its creation, the NBCA award winner has also gone on to win the Red Auerbach Trophy, as did Kenny Atkinson of the Cavaliers in 2025.

Bickerstaff will still face stiff competition, with six other coaches receiving votes: Mark Daigneault (Thunder), Mitch Johnson (Spurs), Charles Lee (Hornets), Joe Mazzulla (Celtics), Quin Snyder (Hawks), and Tiago Splitter (Trail Blazers).
