Former NBA star Isaiah Thomas is generating buzz on social media after mentioning a possible move to EuroLeague. At 36 years old, the American point guard seems ready to cross the Atlantic to continue his basketball career in Europe.
A career at a standstill in the NBA
« I’m thinking about going to EuroLeague… I just want to play », Thomas wrote on his social media, provoking a strong reaction in the basketball world. This statement comes as more and more NBA players are crossing the Atlantic, with former names from the North American league being convinced by EuroLeague.
Recently, Cameron Payne signed with Partizan Belgrade, and Isaiah Thomas could be the next to follow this path to test himself in Europe. His message caught the attention of Malcolm Delaney, who played in the NBA but especially in EuroLeague, with Bayern Munich, Lokomotiv Kuban, as well as Olimpia Milan and Barcelona.
« It’s fun, man… the best basketball atmosphere in the world », commented the former Chalon guard, sharing his perspective on European basketball.
NBA All-Star in 2016 and 2017
Thomas has 556 regular season NBA appearances and was selected twice to the All-Star Game in 2016 and 2017. In recent years, the Tacoma, Washington native has struggled to secure a long-term role, last playing with the Phoenix Suns in 2024. His career has been split between the NBA and G-League, but his talent remains undeniable. The former Washington Huskies star also experienced FIBA basketball with Team USA during the November 2021 international windows.
EuroLeague could represent the perfect opportunity for Thomas to get playing time and demonstrate that he can still contribute at the highest level. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to do better than Kemba Walker, another former NBA scoring point guard who had a lackluster stint with AS Monaco in 2023-2024.
