The 2030 Women’s Basketball World Cup will take place in Tokyo. It’s official: meeting this Wednesday in Berlin on the sidelines of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup, FIBA’s Central Bureau has designated Japan as the organizing country for the next edition of the world tournament, which will take place in the Japanese capital from November 26 to December 8, 2030.
Beyond the choice of host country, it’s the window change that constitutes the real breakthrough. As the WNBA progressively takes power in global women’s basketball, FIBA has decided to place its 2030 World Cup in November and December, a period during which the American championship is on break.
A strategic scheduling shift to maximize talent participation
Since the 2002 edition, the world tournament had been held in September and October, right in the heart of the WNBA season, or even during its playoffs. The consequences of this overlap have been painful for many national teams, and France knows something about this.
For EuroBasket 2025, Gabby Williams, Marine Johannès, Dominique Malonga and Carla Leite had to skip the competition with the French national team due to their WNBA commitments. The 2026 World Cup in Berlin, which runs from September 4 to 13, will not escape this problem either. While the WNBA will take a break, preparation risks being reduced to the extreme.
Already host country for the 2021 Olympics, Japan won an unforgettable silver medal there, beating France in the semifinals. This World Cup takes on additional symbolic dimension: it will coincide with the centenary of the Japan Basketball Association (JBA).
The move to winter scheduling represents FIBA’s acknowledgment of the WNBA’s growing influence in women’s basketball and demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the world’s best players can participate in international competition without conflicting loyalties.
