Enovos League Basketball Play-Offs 2025-26: Visitors Dominate Opening Round, Favorites Face Uphill Battle

The first round of Luxembourg's basketball play-offs delivered a surprising trend. Three away victories out of four matches in the men's quarter-finals and women's semi-finals this weekend, and the favored teams find themselves in a precarious position right from the start.

The opening weekend of Luxembourg’s 2025-2026 basketball play-offs served up a reality check for the favorites: home court advantage is far from guaranteed in this league. On Saturday and Sunday, the men’s quarter-finals and women’s semi-finals kicked off with a clear message: the road teams came to play.

Three Road Victories Out of Four Matches

The trend is striking. Basket Esch, T71 Dudelange and Résidence Walfer all secured victories in their opening games, leaving their respective opponents in uncomfortable positions right from the start of their best-of-3 series.

At Steinsel, Basket Esch dominated Amicale 76-61, powered by balanced offensive production. Clancy Rugg led the way with 19 points, while the home team struggled to find their rhythm, converting just 32 percent of their field goal attempts—far too low to compete effectively.

At Larochette, T71 Dudelange delivered perhaps the most impressive performance of the weekend. Playing without injured forward Joe Kalmes, Dudelange edged Arantia 88-86 in a tightly contested affair. Maurice Calloo paced the visitors with 27 points, Jimmie Lee Taylor added 26, and Denell Stephens chipped in 14. Arantia had one final chance to tie the game on an intentionally missed free throw but could not capitalize.

At Bertrange, Résidence Walfer appeared to be in control for much of the game, leading 56-41 at halftime. Sparta mounted several comebacks in the second half, including a late push in the final minutes, but Walfer answered every run. John Sljachert was the catalyst for the road victory, finishing with 36 points.

Etzella Bucks the Trend

Etzella Ettelbruck was the lone home team to assert dominance, crushing Kordall Steelers 106-67 at home. The convincing victory was built on balanced team play, with Philippe Gutenkauf orchestrating the offense: 21 points and 10 assists for the Luxembourg big man.

Etzella’s dominant home win stands in stark contrast to the struggles of the other home teams. It underscores that collective consistency trumps geography in this league.

Home Court Advantage: Myth or Reality?

This opening weekend raises a fundamental question: does home court advantage truly exist in Luxembourg basketball? The arenas lack the intimidating atmospheres found in larger leagues, and visiting teams appear unfazed by the setting. In a short best-of-3 format where every game carries enormous weight, the home favorites who fell short now face an uphill climb.

The upcoming games in these series will be decisive. For Amicale Steinsel, Arantia Larochette and Sparta Bertrange, the necessity to win on the road to stay alive—especially given what this opening round just demonstrated—significantly complicates their path forward.
