Three days after being selected second overall in the 2025 Draft, Dylan Harper was officially introduced Saturday during a press conference in San Antonio. The 19-year-old guard didn’t wait long to make bold promises to Spurs fans, frustrated by six consecutive years without playoffs.

« That’s going to change very quickly: we’re making the playoffs, » Harper declared confidently. « I think our group is really exciting, there’s a lot to look forward to. Our group has no limit. »

A prestigious legacy to carry with number 2

Harper will wear jersey number 2, previously worn by Kawhi Leonard, NBA Finals MVP champion with San Antonio. This symbolic responsibility doesn’t seem to intimidate the rookie, who’s already setting personal goals for his first season.

« I don’t feel any particular pressure at this level, but I clearly want the streak to continue, » explained the former Rutgers player regarding the Rookie of the Year title. San Antonio has won this trophy in the last two seasons with Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, and no franchise has ever had three consecutive winners.

« That’s definitely one of my goals, but my main focus will probably be improving daily, taking things day by day, step by step, and learning from everyone as soon as possible, » he specified.

Harper will have the support of Carter Bryant, selected 14th overall, an athletic wing specializing in 3-point shooting and defense. The two players have known each other since high school and will make their debuts at the California Summer League on July 5th in San Francisco against the Miami Heat.

Inspiration from franchise legends

The unique environment of the Spurs has already impacted the young rookie, who had the chance to meet several franchise legends during his first workouts. « I was training when I happened to run into Tim Duncan, Gregg Popovich and Manu Ginobili, » Harper recalled in awe. « That’s not something you see everywhere. »

This encounter strengthened his motivation to restore San Antonio to its former glory. « Growing up, this was one of those teams you dreamed of playing for. When you see their dynasty, you just want to continue building from there and hang some more banners from the ceiling. »

Despite his displayed confidence, Harper remains aware of the work ahead. « I think my confidence and everything else comes from all the work I’ve put in until now, » he explained. « But you also have to stay humble because things can disappear as quickly as they came. »
