Chris Paul to replace Damian Lillard in Milwaukee?

A financial decision causing waves
It’s the surprise of this NBA free agency period. The Milwaukee Bucks have made the radical decision to release Damian Lillard, their All-Star point guard, to create financial room to recruit Myles Turner. A move that disrupts the Wisconsin franchise’s plans and opens a new chapter in the 35-year-old player’s career.

Chris Paul in Milwaukee’s sights
Damian Lillard, out for several months due to a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered during the playoffs against the Pacers, was set to earn $113 million through 2027. Milwaukee decided to pay his salary by spreading it over the next five years, about $22 million per year. This operation allows the Bucks to finalize Myles Turner’s recruitment for $107 million over four years.
According to Chris Haynes, Giannis Antetokounmpo is reportedly « not satisfied » with his management’s decision. An understandable reaction knowing that Lillard was supposed to be the « Greek Freak’s » ideal partner to bring Milwaukee back to the top.
Without their starting point guard, the Bucks are now turning to Chris Paul. At 40, the Spurs veteran doesn’t want to retire and wants to play a 21st NBA season. However, this operation looks complicated for Milwaukee.
« The Bucks will try to sign Chris Paul, but I’ve heard he wants to stay close to home with the Clippers, even though the Suns are still in the race, » reports Chris Haynes. The point guard would prefer returning to the West Coast for family reasons.
« My son just turned 16, my daughter 12, and these past six seasons, I’ve lived away from them. I don’t think I want to play much longer and to be honest, I want to be a father, » Chris Paul explained last June.
Meanwhile, Damian Lillard is trying to stay positive according to The Athletic. Several title contenders, including the Warriors, have already contacted the former Portland player. Free to choose his destination, he could take his time with rehabilitation before bouncing back next summer.
