A Bucks bench cornerstone since 2020
Arriving in Milwaukee in 2020 as a free agent, Bobby Portis quickly established himself as one of the most effective sixth men in the NBA. NBA champion in 2021 with the Bucks, he finished in the top 3 of Sixth Man of the Year voting in both 2023 and 2024.
The new three-year deal, negotiated by his agent Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, includes a player option for the 2027-2028 season. This extension makes Portis one of the few remaining members of the 2021 championship team, bringing valuable continuity to Doc Rivers’ roster.
A challenging 2024-2025 season but successful return
Portis’ last season was marked by a 25-game suspension in February for violating the NBA‘s anti-doping policy after testing positive for a banned painkiller. This sanction limited him to just 49 games, a career-low, averaging 13.9 points and 8.4 rebounds in 25.4 minutes per game.
Despite the suspension, the former Arkansas player showed his value during the playoffs, averaging 14.0 points over five games before the Bucks‘ first-round elimination. Over the last three seasons, he has scored 2,181 points off the bench, the third-highest total in the NBA behind Malik Monk and Naz Reid.
A strong signal to convince Giannis Antetokounmpo
This extension is part of the Bucks‘ broader strategy to retain their superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. According to reports, the two-time MVP is closely watching offseason moves before deciding whether to request a trade.
With Khris Middleton’s trade, Damian Lillard’s serious Achilles injury, and Brook Lopez’s likely departure, Portis could play an even bigger role in Milwaukee’s roster. His versatility and playoff experience make him a valuable asset for a franchise at a crossroads.
