ASVEL Shifts Focus to Both Gach as Luwawu-Cabarrot Track Fades

Recruitment Update — After stepping back from talks with Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot, ASVEL has identified Both Gach as its new primary wing target for 2026-2027. The JL Bourg standout, fresh off a EuroCup title, is drawing interest from multiple EuroLeague clubs, including Partizan Belgrade, putting Villeurbanne in a competitive race.

ASVEL‘s recruitment strategy is shifting. The Villeurbanne club, preparing for another campaign in both Betclic ELITE and the EuroLeague, has quietly moved away from Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot as a priority target. Discussions with the former NBA player, who spent last season at Baskonia, have stalled and key deadlines have passed without an agreement. The French international’s path to ASVEL now appears largely closed.

Both Gach, a EuroCup Champion, Becomes the New Priority

In his place, ASVEL has turned its attention to Both Gach, a 27-year-old guard/forward standing at 1.98m. The American-South Sudanese wing just completed a breakthrough season with JL Bourg, contributing significantly to the club’s EuroCup title run. In Betclic ELITE, Gach averaged 12.6 points on 43.6% shooting, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists over 33 games, logging 25 minutes per game and establishing himself as one of Bourg’s most reliable and versatile players. In EuroCup competition, he was even sharper, posting 13.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.

Gach’s trajectory is a compelling one. Born in Austin, Texas, he played college basketball at the University of Utah and the University of Minnesota before launching his professional career in Kosovo. He then made a name for himself in Finland, winning the national championship and earning the foreign MVP award with BC Nokia in 2024, before stints in Turkey and ultimately his standout year at Bourg.

A Competitive Market for ASVEL’s Top Wing Target

ASVEL is not alone in pursuing Gach. Partizan Belgrade is also tracking the versatile wing, and multiple EuroLeague clubs have registered interest. According to reports from Ouest-France, Gach’s salary could be tripled as part of a potential deal — a figure that reflects both his market value and the intensity of competition around him. ASVEL, operating with a record budget this cycle, is positioned to compete financially for his signature.

On other fronts, ASVEL’s recruitment picture is taking shape. Talks with German international Daniel Theis, a 34-year-old interior player standing at 2.03m, are progressing positively and he remains a priority for the frontcourt. Meanwhile, Mathis Dossou-Yovo, the 2.06m, 25-year-old French big man, is not interested in a third-pivot role within the ASVEL rotation, and no formal offer has been made to him.

With the Luwawu-Cabarrot chapter effectively closed, ASVEL’s front office is now focused on landing a wing capable of contributing at the highest European level. Both Gach, coming off the best season of his career, fits that profile — and the battle to sign him is only getting started.
