Anadolu Efes pulled off a spectacular comeback in Munich, erasing a 16-point deficit against Bayern Munich to win 81-80 thanks to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Cole Swider, set up by the game’s MVP, Jordan Loyd. A victory snatched in the final seconds after trailing by 16 points.

A dramatic finish after a heroic comeback

The Turkish team seemed to be in trouble in this matchup, facing a significant deficit against a well-positioned Bavarian side. But Anadolu Efes found the resources to come back level midway through the fourth quarter, completely reopening the game.

FC Bayern Munich briefly retook the lead in the final moments, but they didn’t count on Cole Swider. The American forward hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer, a 3-pointer that will go down in the history books. Paradoxically, Swider hadn’t made any other shot in this game, finishing with just 3 points in three and a half minutes of playing time.

Jordan Loyd carries Anadolu Efes’ offense

While Swider shone in crunch time, it was Jordan Loyd who carried Anadolu Efes’ offense throughout the game. The American-Polish guard finished as his team’s leading scorer with 20 points, well supported by P.J. Dozier and his 12 points. Starting at the 5 position, Brice Dessert contributed 8 points on 4/6 shooting and 2 rebounds in 17 minutes. Isaïa Cordinier added 3 rebounds and 3 assists off the bench (16 minutes) while Vincent Poirier and Rodrigue Beaubois did not play.

The Turkish contributions were also noteworthy, with Şehmus Hazer adding 11 points and Ercan Osmani 10 points. On the Bayern Munich side, Xavier Rathan-Mayes led the offense with 15 points, followed by Andreas Obst and his 13 points, but it wasn’t enough to avoid this heartbreaking home loss.

This victory allows Anadolu Efes to continue its European campaign on a positive note, after a home loss against last-place ASVEL.
