Alex Mumbru can finally breathe easier. The 46-year-old German national team coach has left the hospital after several weeks of intensive treatment. « I feel better. I’m finally back home. Hospital time is over, » he stated, marking the end of a medical ordeal that lasted several months.

A chaotic medical journey during EuroBasket

The former Spanish international experienced a true medical nightmare that began just before EuroBasket 2025. Suffering from severe pancreatitis, Mumbru was hospitalized in Tampere, Finland, before the start of the group phase. This situation forced him to let his assistant Alan Ibrahimagic manage the German team during this crucial period.

Although receiving medical clearance to rejoin the team during the knockout phase in Riga, Mumbru couldn’t fully perform his duties. He mainly focused on assisting Ibrahimagic and the rest of the technical staff with tactical preparation and game analysis, preferring to stay behind his players during matches.

The physical impact of his illness was evident, as the coach had lost 16 kilos and his gallbladder following surgery. Despite these difficulties, Germany won European gold under Ibrahimagic’s primary leadership, but Mumbru couldn’t celebrate this title with his players in Germany.

Extended recovery in Barcelona

Mumbru’s medical troubles didn’t end with EuroBasket. In mid-September, the coach was hospitalized again, this time in Barcelona, his hometown, where he underwent additional treatment for over a month. This new hospitalization prevented him from participating in the German European title celebrations.

Now cleared to continue his recovery at home, Mumbru can finally look to the future with more optimism. However, his return to coaching remains uncertain for Germany’s upcoming fixtures. The team is set to face Israel at home on November 28, followed by an away game against Cyprus on December 1 in the European World Cup 2027 qualifiers.
