Albicy and Pelos lose their coach: Gran Canaria parts ways with Jaka Lakovic

The verdict has been handed down in the Canary Islands. Following a home defeat against San Pablo Burgos (95-109) and a streak of eight consecutive losses, CB Gran Canaria officially parted ways with Jaka Lakovic. Four years after taking charge, the Slovenian coach is paying the price for a disastrous run that has placed the club in the relegation zone of Liga ACB.
The end of an era
Having arrived in June 2022, Jaka Lakovic had already written his name into club history in his very first season. Under his guidance, Gran Canaria won the EuroCup in 2023, one of the most significant titles in the franchise’s history. A former international point guard who played for Panathinaikos, FC Barcelona and Galatasaray, the Slovenian coach had gone on to keep the club in the Liga ACB playoffs, finishing 6th three years ago, then 7th in each of the two following seasons.
But the 2025-2026 season marks a sharp break. With a record of 7 wins and 18 losses, Gran Canaria sits 15th in the Spanish championship, just one win above the direct relegation spot currently occupied by Andorra and and French player Yves Pons. The eight-game losing streak ultimately convinced the front office to make a change. No successor has been announced yet.

The French players on borrowed time
In this difficult context, the club’s two French players, Andrew Albicy and Pierre Pelos, are enduring a tense end to the season. At 36, Andrew Albicy is playing his 6th season in Gran Canaria colors. An iconic point guard and floor general at the club, he was one of the key figures in the 2023 EuroCup triumph.
Pierre Pelos left France and JL Bourg before joining the Canary Islands side in 2022-2023. Now in his 3rd season at the club, the big man is paradoxically putting up his best individual numbers since his arrival: 9.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, shooting 54.6%. These rising figures stand in stark contrast to the team’s sharply declining results.
In the BCL as well, the season ends in disappointment, with the club having failed to qualify for the final rounds. The coaching change appears to be a last resort to try to revive a team now fighting for its place in Liga ACB. For Albicy, Pelos and their teammates, the coming weeks will be decisive.
