Nearly three months after his devastating Achilles tendon rupture, Jayson Tatum shows encouraging signs of progress. The Boston Celtics star was present Wednesday at the joint training camp of the New England Patriots with the Washington Commanders, and most importantly, he was walking on the field without his protective boot.

A recovery that appears « ahead of schedule »
After suffering a right Achilles tendon rupture on May 13 against the Knicks, Tatum seems to be progressing well. A scout, quoted by Heavy Sports last week, found him « way ahead » and was « shocked to see how well he was moving. »
During his visit to Patriots camp, the Celtics forward stayed on the sidelines, interacting with players and QB Jayden Daniels. His presence without boot or brace is an encouraging sign, despite a rehabilitation that could keep him out for the entire NBA season.
In June, a month and a half after surgery, Brad Stevens praised Tatum’s progress: « He’s progressed really well, but I don’t know what that means for timelines. » He added: « His return will be in consultation… to ensure he’s ready and fully healthy. »
Tatum is coming off a season averaging 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Even as he continues his recovery, he appears ahead of schedule. He recently worked out in the gym at the Celtics facility.
