Already qualified for the EuroBasket quarter-finals after their victories against Turkey on Wednesday and Greece on Thursday evening, the French women’s team won decisively against Switzerland (111-37), thus securing first place in Group A. This 74-point victory is the biggest margin recorded at the Euro since the USSR’s win against Belgium in 1976 (127-48).

Group A’s first place secured

The French team continues to gain momentum in this EuroBasket 2025. Like against Greece two days ago, Jean-Aimé Toupane’s players set a relentless pace from the start. Thanks to aggressive defense and transition efficiency, the French quickly built a significant lead at the beginning of the match (10-0, 3′). Struggling defensively, the Swiss, forced to commit fouls to stop opposing attacks, quickly found themselves in foul trouble. With a 16-point lead after a controlled and offensive first quarter (25-9, 10′), the French team executed their game plan perfectly.

An offensive showcase by the French team

Following the first quarter’s pattern, the French continued their offensive festival. Led by Janelle Salaün (23 points) and captain Valériane Ayayi (19 points), the French team gave no chance to the completely overwhelmed Swiss. Dominating in all aspects of the game this Saturday afternoon in Piraeus, the French led by up to 30 points in the second quarter (39-9, 14′) and even 40 points (54-13, 18′). Never threatened in this first half, the French team made a strong impression in these first twenty minutes (60-14, 20′). In two quarters, Jean-Aimé Toupane’s players only conceded 14 points, demonstrating their defensive solidity.

Noémie Brochant, another revelation of this early Euro

After halftime, the Swiss returned to the court with much more energy and intensity. Though the gap was already significant and the outcome known, the French team, who slightly relaxed at the start of the second half, resumed their momentum to definitively extinguish François Gomez’s team. Like Janelle Salaün and Valériane Ayayi, Noémie Brochant (15 points) also stood out this Saturday afternoon. A wide victory surpassing 100 points that confirms French ambitions in this European championship.

Next up for France is the quarter-finals on Tuesday. They now await to learn who their next opponent will be.
